Montmarte / La Mère Catherine
Montmartre is a hill which is 450 feet high, and also the name of the surrounding district, in the north of Paris, a part of the Right Bank, primarily known for the white-domed Basilica of the Sacré Cœur (Sacred Heart) on its summit and as a nightclub district. Many artists had studios or worked around the community of Montmartre such as Salvador Dalí, Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso and Vincent van Gogh.
Chez la Mere Catherine restaurant high above Paris on Montmartre’s Place du Tertre is one of the city’s most historic eateries, founded in 1793. Remember ‘Eat, drink and be merry for tomorrow we may die’? Danton wrote those words within these very walls. The term ‘bistro’ was coined here.
